Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the ways in which the famed American explorer, Richard Evelyn Byrd and his colleagues, used reading, books, and a library to help his men cope with the sometimes debilitating monotony of long stretches of expedition life. The article also examines some of the library practices used in developing these libraries in decidedly amateur but effective ways.
